The president of the semiautonomous Somali state of Puntland Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas said that his administration arrested the soldier who shot dead two United Nations officials at the airport of Galkayo on Monday.
Talking to the media in the aftermath of the brutal killing, President Gaas said that his forces arrested two people who are suspected to be the shooter and the owner of the gun used for the murder.
“Such barbaric act is not known in the history of Puntland—We are investigating it to try to find out if the soldier did the killing on his own or if he was serving for others” Mr. Abdiweli Gaas told the media in Galkayo.
“It was really unfortunate that such assassination took place here in Puntland today” he said, adding that he was sending sympathy to the families of the two UN officials.
President Gaas identified the slain UN staffers as a Briton and a Canadian, adding that the perpetrator was one of Puntland’s security forces stationed at Galkayo airport.
The barbaric killing coincided with the arrival of Mr. Gaas in the city.
Meanwhile, the Al-Qaeda-linked Al Shabab militants fighting in Somalia said they welcomed the assassination of Western officials working for the United Nations.
But the notorious Islamists didn’t say whether they were responsible for the brutal killing.
