The African Union's Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security arrived in Mogadishu Tuesday (November 25th) for a four-day official visit to Somalia.
Bineta Diop will speak with Somali women, policy makers and civil society organisations to evaluate the inclusion of women in Somalia's reconstruction.
The special envoy also will hold talks with government officials on sexual abuse and exploitation in Somalia, and will highlight the African Union's commitment to zero tolerance of gender-based violence.
Somali women and girls face a particularly high risk of gender-based violence, according to a report compiled by the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Diop's visit is intended to demonstrate the African Union's commitment to ensuring women's participation in all facets of Somali society as peace is restored in the country.
"Our mission is really to make sure we listen to the different actors," Diop told Somalia's RBC Radio.
