Burundi East African Community (EAC) Minister Leontine Nzeyimana Friday said Burundi is going to pay fees Burundian officials who participate in EAC meetings after the German cooperation agency GIZ suspended its aid for Burundian citizens.

"I read in the newspapers that the German cooperation agency GIZ wrote to the EAC secretariat, saying that it has suspended its support to Burundi’s delegates participating in EAC meetings.

"I was surprised to get the information through newspapers.

"I have not yet seen the letter myself," Burundian EAC Affairs Minister Leontine Nzeyimana has told Xinhua.

According to her, GIZ has suspended the support in terms of air ticket and subsistence fees for Burundian officials participating in the meetings.

She indicated that the issue of the suspension of the support by the GIZ is to be analyzed at the council of ministers in a bid to look at ways of coping with the situation.

Several international partners of Burundi including Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, the European Union, Germany and Switzerland have reduced or suspended their support following the political crisis the east African nation is facing since late April caused by the third term bid of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Despite protests by the opposition protesting against what they called the violation of the national constitution and the 2000 Arusha Agreement, President Nkurunziza was re-elected for a third term in office on July 21.
