Germany voiced concern Friday at the fighting in Somalia, with Foreign Office spokesman Martin Jaeger saying a senior German diplomat would travel to the region on Saturday.

"Germany continues to monitor the situation with close attention," he said in Berlin. The main German emphasis would be on humanitarian relief to the areas affected by the fighting.

A diplomatic service special envoy for Africa would visit the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and the Egyptian capital Cairo for talks with the Arab League on the crisis.

On January 1 Finland hands over the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union to Germany.

Ethiopian forces have invaded Somalia to reinstate that nation's transitional government and depose Islamists. The transitional government has declared control of key locations in the capital Mogadishu, including the port and the airport, news reports say.
