At least three people have been killed in the capital of Somalia in a battle between insurgents and security forces.

Officials in Mogadishu say the incident began Saturday when an insurgent threw a grenade into a group of security officers patrolling the Bakara market. The grenade killed at least two people and wounded at least one officer.

The officers returned fire, killing one person.

Earlier this week, government forces battled insurgents in the same market, the scene of almost daily violence in recent weeks.

Islamists controlled Mogadishu and many other Somali cities until late last year, when the government ousted them with the help of Ethiopian forces. The government has since struggled to assert its authority in the face of an insurgent campaign.

Somalia has been mired in anarchy since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
