NAIROBI, Kenya (UPI) - The Kenyan government has begun talks with several international agencies on the possibility of opening its borders to refugees from Somalia.

A representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said Tuesday the Kenyan government is considering opening its borders to refugees who remain impoverished in border towns, The Nation reported.

"Discussions are going on with the government to look into the security situation and have genuine refugees come to Kenya where they can be assisted," representative Emmanuel Nyaberi said. Nyaberi said with more than 4,000 refugees in the border town of Doble alone, humanitarian aid was being dispersed until a decision can be reached.

"The final word will still have to come from the Kenyan government whether some of the asylum seekers will be allowed in because the Kenya-Somalia border is still closed," he said.
