newinsideMOGADISHU (AFP) — At least 10 people were killed and 20 wounded in
clashes between Islamist insurgents and local clan militia in a
southern Somali city, officials and witnesses said Thursday.
The fighting in Kismayo, 500 kilometres (300 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, erupted late Wednesday.
"At least 10 people, most of them fighters, were killed in the clashes which appear be over control of the town," local elder Abdulahi Moalim Dahir told AFP. "Some of the dead bodies were only discovered this morning."
Local resident Sahro Mohamed said four of the 10 known fatalities were civilians who were caught in the crossfire.

Hasan, a doctor at Kismayo hospital, said at least 20 people wounded in
the fighting had been admitted for treatment since Wednesday.
