Finding Solutions for the Somali Crisis  - Conference Background
You are cordially invited to attend a discussion forum and conference being hosted by The Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance and co-sponsored by Somali Cause, the University of Toronto Somali Students Association and the University of Toronto’s New College. This conference is intended to broaden the knowledge base of all Canadians who are interested in working with peace-creation and development initiatives in Somalia. It will be a forum for discussion to define the role of Canadians, Europeans and Americans in finding a resolution to the violence and suffering in Somalia. This conference aims to bring together Somali and non-Somali scholars and experts to discuss the state of affairs in the East African country. Presentations will be interactive and reflect the overall theme of the conference; Finding Solutions.

Key Note Speaker:

Bill Fletcher Jr., Director of Field Services & Education for the American Federation of Government Employees and former President of TransAfrica Forum in Washington, D.C  Other  speakers include Abdulkadir Abdirahman Chairman of Somali Cause, Washington D.C.

Bill has served as the executive editor of BlackCommentator.com. From January 2002 through April 2006 he served as the President and chief executive officer of TransAfrica Forum, a national non-profit organization educating and advocating for policies in favor of the peoples of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. 

Bill also served as Education Director and later Assistant to the President of the AFL-CIO. He is also the co-author of the pictorial booklet: The Indispensable Ally: Black Workers and the Formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, 1934-1941.  He is the co-author, with Fernando Gapasin, of the book Solidarity Divided which examines the crisis of organized labor in the United States. While in Boston, Bill served as an adjunct faculty member with the Labor Studies Program of the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
