A Boeing cargo jet is loaded with more than 10 tons of food and medical supplies before leaving OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng for Somalia on Friday night.
The supplies will be transported by road to the hardest-hit parts of the country.
The consignment was handed over to the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers for distribution. Ravi Naidoo, managing director of Interactive Africa, said South African companies had donated more than R1-million in cash and food supplies just this week.
Companies such as Tiger Brands, Foodcorp, Coca-Cola, Absa, e.tv, Nando's, DStv, Old Mutual Foundation and Sanlam Investments made monetary and food parcel contributions. The aircraft was provided by Kulula.com at what Naidoo described as 'the lowest rate possible'.
Naidoo said those who wanted to lend a helping hand should visit www.designindaba.com/relief-fund to find out how.
