Somali natives living in Calgary have been forced to watch and wait as relatives make an often-life-threatening trek across their home country in search of food and water.
Step UP for Somalia is making final preparations ahead of next week’s walk from Calgary to Edmonton. |
But on Aug. 5, seven cousins, making up a group called Step UP for Somalia, will lace up and hit the open road in hopes of raising awareness about the plight of their relatives.
Thousands have died, including family members of Filson Abdi, who is part of the Step UP group.
“It’s not even so much that they are close to us, it’s that they are human beings,” she said.
The group plans to pack light. Some members will be taking part in Ramadan on the journey, forgoing food and water during the day.
“We hope it’s not too hot,” said member Yasmin Siad with a laugh.
