Hailing Iran's humanitarian aid to Somalia; the President of the Somali Red Crescent Society says that his country has been able to leave behind an all out famine. In a visit with his counterpart in Tehran Ahmad Mohammed Hassan thanked Iran for its considerable contribution in aiding Somalia during the 2011 famine.

Somalia is one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced people in the world. Without a functioning government since 1991 the country experienced a crippling drought along with Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti in the horn of Africa in 2011. The crisis turned into famine only in Somalia, while the aid groups' access to the country was reduced due to violent clashes between the government and the al-Shabab forces. Iran was one of the countries that played a key role in the global Somali aid project.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society is now planning to start a new phase of activities in Somalia. Despite security concerns in the war torn country the society says that it aims at launching its developmental phase which is to make life easier for the Somali people.

Iranian Red Crescent Society currently has a permanent medical center and five makeshift clinics in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, where Iranian physicians provide treatment for the people.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society has expressed hope that the upcoming elections in Somalia would be able to establish a government which can provide enough security and make the job easier for all aid organizations in that country.
