Missing Somali man likely killed, Calgary police say

Monday, April 28, 2014

Calgary police believe a 25-year-old man who went missing in February was killed, but they have not identified any suspects.

Suryan Giama was last seen by family Feb. 17 at a Woodbine home. Police recovered his vehicle about a month later in the Britannia-Elboya area of the southwest.

Forensic evidence gleaned from multiple scenes in Calgary suggested foul play and that Giama was likely the victim of a homicide, said Sgt. John Hebert of the Calgary Police Service’s major crimes unit.

Police are now trying to locate his body and interview witnesses who can help trace his movements prior to his disappearance.

There was an early report that Giama was trying to sell his vehicle before he went missing, but Hebert said that avenue of the investigation “hasn’t been fruitful at this point.”

Hebert would not disclose whether Giama was involved in crime, given that he’s a victim, though the investigator said, “We’re open to any one of those avenues as part of the investigation.”

Giama is described as being of Somalian descent, approximately 6-foot tall, weighing 150 pounds with a slim build and a goatee.

Anyone with information about Giama’s disappearance is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
