BELEDWEYNE (HOL) - Tension is building up in Hiiraan region following mobilization of forces by a faction opposed to the newly elected government in HirShabelle state.
Sources close to the developments have told HOL attempts by the regional governor Ali Jeyte Osman to engage the faction calling itself Hiiraan Rescue Council (HRC) failed Sunday night.
The governor had travelled to Elgal village in the outskirts of Beletweyne town to meet the leaders of HRC but night-long talks yielded no fruit, a source said. The governor is reportedly seeking to engage the faction for another round of talks amid fears of potential conflict should the talks collapse.
The faction is reported to be opposed to the election of Ali Guudwale as the new president of HirShabelle.
There was expectation based on clan arrangements that a new president would be from Hiiraan region.
