Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali Coast Guard, in collaboration with the European Union Naval Operation ATALANTA, has completed a joint exercise to enhance maritime security in the region and counter illegal activities in Somali waters.

The training, which emphasized Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) techniques and the use of the EU-funded IORIS maritime coordination tool, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Somali forces' capabilities.

The exercise aligns with a broader strategy to transition maritime security responsibilities from EU forces to Somali personnel, increasing the nation's sovereignty and reducing its reliance on foreign military support.

Operation ATALANTA, launched in 2008 to combat piracy off Somalia's coast, has significantly curbed such incidents, thanks to a mix of naval patrols and intelligence-sharing among international partners.

The shift of maritime security duties to Somali forces is expected to enhance regional stability and attract foreign investment by securing Somali waters. This transition allows the EU to reallocate resources to address other emerging maritime threats while reinforcing diplomatic ties with Somalia.

Somalia's partnerships extend beyond the EU, as demonstrated by a recent defense and economic cooperation agreement signed with Türkiye in February 2024. This agreement further strengthens Somalia's military capabilities and underscores international support for Somalia's sovereignty.

The EU has actively developed a sustainable security architecture across the Western Indian Ocean. A key component of this effort is the EU Maritime Security Programme (MASE), which supports implementing a regional strategy to combat piracy and promote maritime security in Eastern and Southern Africa.

These developments are part of Somalia's broader efforts to stabilize the country, protect its borders, and contribute to regional security. As Somalia continues to build its security infrastructure with international assistance, it is poised to play a more significant role in regional maritime safety and economic development.
