Hargeisa (HOL) — A newly formed rebel group, Sancani Two, has agreed to disarm on Monday after launching an attack on a police station in Balligubadle, a town in the Hawd region of Somaliland.
The decision to disarm came following successful mediation by traditional elders in the area.

The group attacked a police station in Balligubadle, leading to a brief clash with local law enforcement. Police managed to seize one of the four vehicles used by the rebels during the assault, and one of the rebels was injured in the encounter. The rebellion reportedly stemmed from political grievances after several political organizations were excluded from participating in the upcoming presidential election. The rebels did not receive backing from the Horseed political organization despite initially claiming to be fighting on its behalf.
Horseed chairman Abdillahi Dirawal condemned the use of violence for political purposes.
In response to the incident, Somaliland police have vowed to take strict measures against anyone found carrying firearms or military-grade weapons, following the agreement reached with the rebels.
The Somaliland election is scheduled for November 13, 2024.
