Kismayo (HOL) — A military court in Somalia’s Jubbaland State has sentenced four women found guilty of providing intelligence to al-Shabaab militants operating in the country.
The defendants—Nasro Nur Osman, Xawo Ibrahim Mohamed, Iqro Farah Abdinur, and Maryan Mohamed Adan—were convicted of regularly sharing information about military movements and local community members in the Buulohaji area, according to court officials.
After reviewing the evidence and the individual circumstances of the accused, the court determined that some of the defendants were minors, which influenced the nature of the sentencing.
Instead of prison time, the court ordered all four to undergo a structured rehabilitation program. Security agencies were directed to monitor their progress closely during the course of the program.
In its ruling, the court emphasized the importance of combating extremist ideology while balancing justice with consideration for age, living conditions, and the societal roles of women.
Officials said the sentence reflects the Jubbaland administration’s broader efforts to counter al-Shabaab’s influence and safeguard social stability. The court also called for greater public awareness—particularly among youth and women—to combat the spread of misinformation and extremist recruitment.
