Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Future Council on Sunday cautioned against what it described as the risk of politicizing the Somali National Army, urging authorities to safeguard the force’s neutrality and institutional integrity.
In a statement marking the 66th anniversary of the army’s founding on April 12, the council congratulated members of the force and acknowledged their role in defending the country, preserving national unity and maintaining public security.
“The National Army is not a tool for personal or group interests,” the statement said, adding that any attempt to involve clan dynamics or vested political agendas could undermine the cohesion of the force and weaken national security.
The council expressed concern over what it called signals in recent political rhetoric that could place security institutions at risk if they are drawn into political disputes. It urged the federal government to reinforce the army’s neutrality and prevent interference that could damage its reputation.
The group also called for greater adherence to constitutional principles within the security sector, recommending that officers be supported to operate strictly under the law and professional military standards.
“Protecting security institutions is a fundamental pillar of statehood,” the statement said, emphasizing that public trust and institutional independence are essential to sustaining the army’s credibility.
Somalia marked the anniversary with a ceremony in Mogadishu attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and Somali National Army Commander Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud. The event featured a military parade displaying armored vehicles and aircraft, highlighting what officials described as the army’s growing operational capacity.
The anniversary comes amid heightened political tensions in parts of the country, with debates intensifying over governance and constitutional changes.
