Somaliland holds maritime security meeting amid red sea tensions

Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened a quarterly meeting of the Maritime Security Coordination Mechanism on Saturday, bringing together key government institutions to assess emerging threats and strengthen coordination along its coastline.

The meeting, held in Hargeisa, focused on the evolving maritime security landscape in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, amid shifting regional and global dynamics affecting major shipping routes.

Officials said discussions centered on assessing new risks and enhancing national coordination to respond to developments that could impact regional stability and international trade.

With more than 850 kilometers (528 miles) of coastline along one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, Somaliland occupies a strategically significant position. Participants underscored ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, transnational crime and smuggling networks, which they said remain persistent threats in the region.

The ministry noted that growing geopolitical tensions have added complexity to maritime security challenges, directly affecting both regional security and global trade flows.

Somaliland reaffirmed its engagement with regional and international partners to support the safety of vital sea lanes and maintain freedom of navigation. Officials emphasized cooperation based on international law, mutual respect and shared security interests.

Participants agreed to strengthen the Maritime Domain Awareness framework by improving inter-agency collaboration, expanding information-sharing mechanisms and coordinating responses to emerging threats.
