Dhusamareb (HOL) — The leader of Towfiiq political party, Sheikh Mohamed Shakir Ali Hassan, said Sunday that his party would reject any attempt to alter the results of Galmudug's landmark one-person, one-vote elections.
Speaking at a press conference, Sheikh Shakir said political organizations had entered the election expecting a free and fair process but alleged that a series of irregularities undermined confidence in the vote, calling on electoral authorities to announce the outcome transparently and in accordance with the law.
He said Towfiiq and other political associations had deployed trained representatives to every polling station to monitor the vote and record the official results at each location.
"Our representatives have the results from every polling station," he said, adding that the party is waiting for the Galmudug electoral commission to announce the official tally.
Sheikh Shakir also accused security forces of interfering in the electoral process, alleging that some party agents were arrested, threatened or prevented from carrying out their responsibilities on election day.
He called for an investigation into the reported incidents and urged authorities to hold anyone responsible for violating the rights of election observers accountable.
The Towfiiq leader appealed to the Galmudug Electoral Commission to publish the final results honestly and transparently, warning that any alteration could undermine public confidence in the region's first direct elections.
The election, held across 11 districts in the Galguduud and Mudug regions, marked the first one-person, one-vote poll in Galmudug since the federal member state was established. More than 200,000 registered voters cast ballots to elect local council representatives and members of the state parliament, making Galmudug the second federal member state, after Southwest State, to hold direct elections under Somalia's ongoing democratic transition.
