Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Future Council accused the federal government Tuesday of using the military and security agencies for political purposes against regional states and opposition figures, warning that the practice could threaten Somalia’s stability.
In a statement, the opposition coalition accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration of organizing militias and fueling security tensions in Puntland.
“Inciting new conflicts could jeopardize the gains made in the fight against ISIS and undermine the efforts of Puntland and international partners to confront terrorism,” the council said.
The group also accused the federal government of previously using troops and weapons in operations against Jubbaland, Southwest State and opposition politicians instead of focusing military resources on the fight against al-Shabab.
The council said Somalia continues to face political disputes over the electoral process and the transfer of power.
It called on the international community, the African Union, the United Nations, IGAD and Somalia’s other partners to take urgent steps to prevent further deterioration of the country’s political and security situation.
The Somali Future Council also called for an inclusive electoral agreement backed by international partners and based on protecting the Constitution, ensuring the neutrality of security institutions and strengthening national stability.
The council warned that if urgent action is not taken, progress made against militant groups could be put at risk and Somalia could face political and security instability with wider regional consequences.
The statement comes amid military movements involving federal government-aligned forces based in Puntland and Puntland state forces.
Residents in Garowe and surrounding areas have expressed concern that the movements could trigger armed clashes if the situation is not de-escalated.
