Garowe (HOL) — The Puntland Council of Politicians and Scholars expressed concern Tuesday over Puntland’s political and security situation, calling for the protection of state institutions, peace and social cohesion.
In a statement, the council accused President Said Abdullahi Deni’s administration of contributing to political and security challenges in Puntland.
It also accused the president of deviating from Puntland’s constitution and laws and altering established legal procedures.
“Those actions had damaged the democratic process and weakened public trust, they said.
The council also condemned what it described as interference by federal government in Puntland’s internal affairs, warning that such actions could further fuel political and security tensions in the region.
The statement also condemned an attack on Dr. Mahmoud Mashruq in Garowe and called on security agencies to conduct a full investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
The council urged Puntland residents to maintain peace, unity and social cohesion and to avoid actions that could incite conflict or division.
It also called on political actors in Puntland to prioritize dialogue, the rule of law and the public interest to prevent further tensions that could affect Puntland’s security and development.
The statement comes days after Puntland announced that no troops or military vehicles other than those belonging to Puntland forces would be allowed to remain in or pass through areas under its control.
The decision was announced Thursday after a meeting of the Puntland Council of Ministers. The council said security and justice institutions had been instructed to take legal action against anyone who violates the order.
The move came amid continuing tensions between Puntland and Somalia’s federal government.
In recent days, reports have emerged of movements involving former Puntland forces joining the Federal Government of Somalia. Some of the forces said they took the step because they had not received benefits and rights they claimed from Puntland authorities.
