Hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of properties have been destroyed after a fire sparked off at a big market in the Wadajir district, south west of the capital Mogadishu overnight.

The fire which began in the middle of the night has completely destroyed shops, super markets, oil producing small machines and other big businesses in the market which is the 4th largest in the capital.

Wadajir district commissioner Ahmed Abdulle Afrah who talked to the media on Tuesday, said that the fire was caused by electrical faults.

“I cannot exactly say how much wealth was burned here, but as you can see the fire destroyed a large scale of properties and we will conduct investigation to find out the real amount destroyed by the fire” the district commissioner said.

Mr. Afrah confirmed there were no human casualties.

The commissioner thanked Mogadishu fire and emergency services, AU, Turkey and Hormuud Telecom for helping to stop the fire from spreading into other part of the market.
