Somali PM slashes cabinet ministers wages by 20% to fund war chest

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Prime Minister has instructed the nation's finance ministry to implement 20% wage cuts on cabinet members on Monday in a bid to raise funds for the ongoing military offensive against al Shabab.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said the federal government would implement the cuts for three months, and other government workers would also see a 5% wage cut.

According to a statement from the PM's office, the finance ministry will hold the money in a separate account.

Earlier this week, regional and federal officials gathered in the Hiiraan region's Mahas district for a high-level security meeting to discuss the ongoing offensive against al Shabab. 

President Mohamud hosted the leaders of Somalia's Federal Member States for met an NCC meeting in Mogadishu no Friday to discuss security cooperation against al-Shabaab.

In Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, the combined forces of local militia and the government have made significant gains against Al Shabab. During the operations, the joint forces liberated more than 50 villages in central Somalia, killing over a thousand militants.
