a homeless shelter for those without families -- is preparing to open its doors to orphans from Somalia, which has been suffering from a severe drought for months.

İstanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu will discuss the issue with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the near future. If Erdoğan approves, 20 Somali orphans will be brought to Turkey to live in Darülaceze.

Currently, there are 28 children in the institution's orphanage for children aged 0-6. If 20 Somali children are brought to the orphanage, it will be at full capacity.

According to US data, drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5.

The United Nations has said previously that tens of thousands of people have died in the drought, the worst in Somalia in 60 years. The UN says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, a statistic that suggests the death toll of small children will rise.

Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu will go to crisis-stricken Somalia on friday along with their families.
